The Pleasure of a Puddle

"Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and when the grass of the meadows is wet with dew, let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath its shade; let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning."
Maria Montessori

The rainstorm's gift of a puddle is an exquisite joy to a child. It offers up so many possibilities - splashing, jumping, making waves, floating objects and presenting a whole new landscape.

A morning walk in the rain today turned into an extended exploration of a puddle's myriad wonders. We rescued a worm from drowning and made a bridge for tiny make-believe characters to walk across. Our soundtrack was the polyphonic song of the birds, celebrating the freshness the rain had provided.

Both of us were kept absorbed for a considerable length of time, frequently exclaiming how wonderful the puddle was and how happy we were that we decided to come out for a stroll in the rain.

  1. An absorbing read when I am caught between the reality of sultry heat and the anticipation of a blissful drizzle; nature apart, I can identify a reflective educator...
